Opening your first office location can be a whirlwind of emotions and to-do lists, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and not quite sure where to start. I want to stress to you first that you are not alone. Many small business owners are initially in the same position and often need help from someone who has been through the process before; this is OKAY! The advantage is that you are able to learn from the lessons of others and hopefully not repeat them. There will be hiccups and mistakes along the way, but do not let this discourage you. I am going to outline a few general processes that will assist you in the transition and your Property Manager is here to help you in any way possible.
This is an exciting time for you and your business and distractions are everywhere. I often hear people talking about how they are going to decorate, what kind of desk they want to get, and a plethora of other thoughts that race through their mind. All of these decisions are necessary and this excitement can help negate the not-so-fun steps of opening a business location. These not-so-fun steps can include zoning regulations, utility set up, and address changes to name a few. Having a game plan on how you intend to accomplish everything that needs to be done is important and focusing on this is key! Once your follow through and accomplish what you must get done, reward yourself with the fun things of business ownership and go shopping for that brand new comfortable office chair. No one wants to sit down for their first day of operations to realize that they forgot to turn the electric into their name and now have no power or worse, have your operations shut down because you are not compliant with your local zoning department. A little extra work and focus up front will inevitably avoid headaches for you down the road.
As a business owner, your ultimate vision sets the pace for the entire operation. Many people get caught up in the long term vision that they overlook the importance of establishing a detailed organizational system for everyone to follow. This is a hard process for many to set up but establishing a system from the beginning will allow you to feel comfortable delegating the day to day so you can direct your focus back to your ultimate vision. Many business owners have a hard time not being a part of every decision simply because they did not invest the time necessary into organizing and outlining a structure for their employees to follow. Organization creates a stable and secure environment where employees know what is expected of them and expedites training of new hires as well as the chaos that often results from a termination. As your company grows, organizational processes may need to be fine-tuned; keep your structure up to date and make sure all changes are fully explained to your staff.
