Staying focused and concentrating while at work is a problem that everyone, CEO to mailroom alike, runs into from time to time. No matter how much you love what you do and want to grow your business, there are always factors to distract you or keep your preoccupied. A lack of focus can lead to extra stress, longer hours, missed opportunities, or, worse, losing a client or contact. If you are having trouble finding your ‘get up and go’ in the New Year, here are a few tips to help you stay on task.
–Remind yourself of your goals by making lists and checking them twice.
Take a page from Santa and start making lists. Check and double to check your lists to ensure that all tasks are completed in a timely fashion.
–Reward yourself every time you achieve a long term goal
This can be something as simple as taking yourself out to lunch or on a shopping trip all the way up to investing in technology you will use to grow your business. Whatever keeps you going and helps you get the work done!
–Give yourself breaks
Even the most determined people can be overwhelmed. Pace yourself and balance your workload. Don’t try to do all your work in one sitting. Breaking up a big task into smaller, more manageable action items, will make it easier to tackle. Finally, take a few minutes each hour to get up and move around. Moving around will help you to feel refreshed and energized.
–Combat procrastination by eliminating distractions
Identify anything that is causing you to procrastinate and remove it from your work space. If the internet is killing your productivity, consider installing a productivity extension. These free extensions will block certain sites during a time period of your choosing, as well as set time limits for recreational browsing.
–Don’t worry, be happy!
If you are always a ‘Debbie Downer’ and look at your work and life in a negative manner, it will be that much harder to remain motivated. It is important to start your day off right. Whether that means having a good breakfast, going to a yoga class, or simply taking a few quiet minutes alone; If you are happy, you will find that you will work much more productively and will enjoy what you are doing. Also, if you stay open-minded and optimistic, tasks will seem much less intimidating and will go by much faster.
While you do not need to master all of these tips, hopefully this will give you a new perspective on how you are doing what you are doing. Work smarter, not harder!
